Well... here is the reason I put the "some imagery may not be suitable for children" because on this blog I want to also showcase the unrealistic portrayal of prehistoric women presented in 1950's to modern day cinema. Some of the subject matter may not be overly friendly to younger dinosaur-loving kids. Even though nothing will be explicit, it heads toward that area and I do not want to lose the respect of any parents....I hope. Well, here is the first in hopefully many Cavegirl illustrations. You might call them pin-ups. I guess this stems from my childhood crushes on Raquel Welch, Wilma Flintstone, and Betty Rubble. I don't know, there is just something about fur bikinis....

Just in time for Halloween! This made-up species embodies more monster-like characteristics than your classic dinosaur. If the Devil himself had his own species of dinosaur, maybe this is what it would look like? This guy is so big and nasty, it could have possibly made a meal out of other predators of it's time. But who knows...it also could have survived on stale candy corn and peanut butter kisses. The Paleo world will never truly know.

Here is a drawing of the speedy Velociraptor, made a popular species by the 1993 film Jurassic Park. My version is based on several illustrations I have seen where it is slightly feathered. I thought this is a cool detail linking modern birds to dinosaurs. The raptors in Jurassic Park were much larger than the actual animal which was around the size of a turkey. The other day I saw some wild turkeys near my house and was surprised by how fast they run. I imagine it must have been quite a sight to see these things move in real life.

Since this blog will cover all sorts of species of prehistoric wildlife, I just did not want to limit it to dinosaurs. I've actually always been more fascinated with prehistoric mammals than dinosaurs. I'm not really sure why, maybe because many of the species lived in the time of humans. One of my favorite of these mammals is the all powerful Smilodon. The Smilodon is believed to have lived approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago. What I found interesting was that is was thought to have been built more powerfully and stocky like a bear, rather than the sleeker big cats we see today. Here in my drawing, I went a little overboard with the cat's size compared to the vulture and the mammoth. I could try to say that the poor mammoth is a baby...but look at those tusks! Anyhow, the saber-tooth is in just as much trouble as it's prey, because that black stuff they are sinking in, is not water. I'm not sure if that is a look of aggression, or fear.

This creature is one of my made-up dinos. He looks more like he comes from a line of predatory species. I just had fun with this guy. I will do a lot of that with this blog, since I am not a paleontologist and I get a lot of my dinosaur facts from sources like the Godzilla films and the Flintstones...just joking...Wikipedia actually. He looks kind of playful if you ask me. It is always more fun to draw the bad guys. So of course what is more bad-assed than a carnivorous dinosaur?

Fowl-Mimic

Here is my drawing of a Gallimimus, which I think were the same ostrich-like dinos shown in the movie Jurrasic Park. Remember that cool scene where the big T-Rex shows up out of nowhere and picks one of them off? Anyhow, I read somewhere (ZooBooks) that "gal-uh-MIME-us" means "fowl mimic". Like many birds today, it had hollow bones which seems kinda weird for an animal so big. It was also thought to be an omnivore, feeding on many species of plants and eating small animals also.

Here is my very first post to Paleo-Buffet. One of my favorite dinosaurs, the legendary Triceratops. I remember as a kid always seeing depictions of this guy spiking his horns through the bloodied guts of the frequently ill-tempered T-Rex. I always root for the underdog.
